Tea party favorite SC Sen. Jim DeMint won't endorse in SC GOP primary

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Tea party favorite U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint says he won't endorse a candidate in the 2012 presidential race, taking what could have been a huge bump in popularity off the table for candidates in early voting South Carolina. DeMint spokesman Wesley Denton on Monday confirmed a report that the senator would stay on the sidelines of the first nominating contest in the South. "He's not going to bed endorsing in the presidential race," Denton said. "He will be focusing on electing conservatives to the United States Senate." The Washington Post first reported that DeMint is staying out of the primary. In January 2007, DeMint's early endorsement of Mitt Romney gave the former Massachusetts governor a bigger presence in a crowded political field that included former New York [...]

Suffolk University – New Hampshire Poll: Romney solid lead, Bachmann Gains June 28, 2011

Suffolk University – New Hampshire Poll: Romney solid lead, Bachmann Gains June 28, 2011

While former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney remains a front-runner in New Hampshire, Michele Bachmann climbed 8 points since May, to 11 percent, according to a Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH TV) poll of likely voters in New Hampshire’s GOP presidential primary. Bachmann’s gain was more than that of any other candidate. Romney, with 36 percent support, gained 1 point since Suffolk University’s last Granite State poll was released nearly two months ago. Feedback on debate Among those who watched the Republican Presidential debate in Manchester earlier this month, 33 percent said Romney won the debate, while 31 percent gave the win to Bachmann. With the exception of Romney and Bachmann, support for the 18 candidates tested remained in single digits. Tim Pawlenty slipped 3 [...]

Jon Huntsman

Jon Huntsman

Kathie Obradovich on Jon Huntsman | Iowa Caucuses June 2011: Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman has said he will try to forge a path to the White House that doesn’t involve a top-three finish in the Iowa caucuses. If he succeeds, he’ll be the first since the caucuses came to prominence as the nation’s leadoff nominating event. Ronald Reagan came in second in Iowa in 1980 without campaigning here. But it seems more likely that Huntsman will follow in the footsteps of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who bypassed Iowa in 2008 only to be shut out before the race reached his target state of Florida. Staying away from Iowa will make it harder for Huntsman to reach a national audience. He’ll miss the August GOP debate here, and other turns in the media spotlight. Should he [...]

Giuliani ‘very close’ to a GOP 2012 Run

Giuliani ‘very close’ to a GOP 2012 Run

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose presidential campaign fizzled in 2008, is leaning toward another race for the White House, according to a close associate.  New York Republican Rep. Peter King, who has known Giuliani for more than 40 years, says the former mayor "is very close to saying he's going to run." "If he were to make the decision today, he would run," says King. Speaking at a dinner with reporters in Washington, King, who was an enthusiastic Giuliani supporter in 2008, said the former mayor has been quietly lining up support and exploring strategy. Giuliani has also examined the mistakes his campaign made in '08, when he did not seriously compete in a contest until the Florida primary, by which time he was hopelessly behind in the race. Fox News Chief Roger Ailes to be Indicted- Left-wing wishful thinking

Fox News Chief Roger Ailes to be Indicted- Left-wing wishful thinking

This 'report' is pretty devoid of evidence. That said, last week's NYT story on Judith Regan alleging that Fox News head Roger Ailes encouraged her to lie to Federal investigators about her affair with NYC police chief Bernie Kerik to protect Rudy Giuliani's presidential hopes was pretty damning. So who knows. Financial blogger Barry Ritholtz posts this morning that "Someone I spoke with claimed that Ailes was scheduled to speak at their event in March, but canceled. It appears that Roger’s people, ostensibly using a clause in his contract, said he “cannot appear for legal reasons.” According to Ritholz's source those "legal reasons" are that "Roger Ailes will be indicted — probably this week, maybe even Monday." So yeah, a lot of ifs. via There's A Report Going [...]

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy Giuliani in 2012?

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy Giuliani in 2012?

Confident that he'd have a chance to win, Rudy Giuliani is rounding up his top political advisers for a possible 2012 presidential run, sources tell Page Six. Sources say the tough-talking former mayor "thinks the Republican race will be populated with far-right candidates like Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee, and there's opportunity for a moderate candidate with a background in national security." Giuliani has even scheduled a trip to New Hampshire for next month to meet with constituents in the state that failed him in January 2008, when he placed fourth in the Republican presidential primary. The problem is that even Rudy loyalists think it's a bad idea. "They think this is crazy," a source said. "They realize how long the odds are, but they are standing by." Read [...]
