Michigan Congressman Thad McCotter will not seek reelection

Michigan Congressman Thad McCotter will not seek reelection

LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) - U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan announced Saturday that he would not seek a sixth term through a write-in campaign after he failed to get enough signatures to get on the ballot. McCotter ran a little-noticed Republican presidential campaign last year before asking voters to re-elect him to his Detroit-area congressional seat. He surprised everyone late last month when he announced the Michigan secretary of state's office had determined he didn't have the 1,000 valid signatures needed to get on the Aug. 7 primary ballot, even though 2,000 signatures were turned in. A spokesman for the secretary of state has said only a couple hundred signatures appeared valid and many seemed to be copies. McCotter initially said he would conduct a write-in [...]

Obama will not be spreading the wealth around! no campaign cash for congressional Democrats

It appears that President Obama is not about to "spread the wealth around" to re-election seeking Democrats.  Guess the cash is not rolling in or Obama is fearful he will need every dollar to defeat the Republican nominee following his dismal record. President Obama's re-election campaign has told Democratic congressional counterparts it will not be transferring money to them before the November elections. "Our top priority and focus is to secure the electoral votes necessary to re-elect the president," said a statement from Obama campaign manager Jim Messina. "There's no doubt that Democratic campaigns face a challenging new political landscape with special interests giving unlimited amounts to super PACs," Messina said. "We're committed to doing everything we can to elect a [...]

Indiana Congressman Dan Burton Retiring

Indiana Congressman Dan Burton Retiring

Beware, all ye cantaloupes in Indiana — Dan Burton is coming home. The Indianapolis Star reports that the Republican congressman, who was first elected in 1982, announced his retirement today at the Indiana statehouse. Over time, the once-entrenched Burton has become increasingly vulnerable to a primary, and he was already facing four opponents this year. In 2008, he won by only 52%-45% in a two-way race. Then in 2010, with many more candidates running and the opposition split, Burton won renomination with a mere 30% of the vote, followed by his nearest opponent at 28%. Burton overcame humble beginnings and a very hard childhood to become a successful real estate broker, and then a politician. After serving on and off in the Indiana legislature starting in 1966, and losing [...]

Barney Frank won't seek reelection in 2012

Congressman Barney Frank will hold a news conference at 1 pm ET to announce that he will not seek re-election in 2012. US Representative Barney Frank, the state’s highest-profile congressman and one of the nation’s leading liberal voices after being among its first openly gay elected officials, planned to announce today that he will not reelection next year. A top adviser told the Globe that the new district in which Frank would have had to run next year was a major factor in his decision. While it retained his Newton stronghold, it was revised to encompass more conservative towns like Walpole while losing New Bedford, a blue-collar city where the Democrat had invested a lot of time and become a leading figure in the region’s fisheries debate. Frank’s campaign manager last year [...]

2012 Wave Election? Anti-Incumbent Mood Against Congress Persists

2012 Wave Election? Anti-Incumbent Mood Against Congress Persists

PRINCETON, NJ -- Twenty-eight percent of U.S. registered voters say most members of Congress deserve re-election, tying the low point in the trend set last year, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll. In early May, Gallup found 24% of Americans approving of the job Congress is doing overall, which reflected a rally in support after the death of Osama bin Laden. Congress' approval rating had been below 20% in March and April. Nevertheless, voters' views of Congress in 2011 -- in terms of both approval and support for most members' re-election -- are no better than they were last year, despite the great turnover in the 2010 elections that led to Republicans' taking control of the House of Representatives. Since 1992, Gallup has typically found more voters saying most members [...]

Barack Obama Launches his 2012 Campaign with Video “It Begins With Us”

The politics we believe in starts not with expensive TV ads or extravaganzas, but with you — with people organizing block-by-block, talking to neighbors, co-workers and friends. And that kind of campaign takes time to build. So even though the race may not reach full speed for a year or more, the work of laying the foundation for our campaign must start today. In the coming days, supporters like you will begin forging a new organization that we'll build together in cities and towns across the country. And we'll need you to help shape our plan as we create a campaign that's farther reaching, more focused, and more innovative than anything we've built before. We'll start by doing something unprecedented: coordinating millions of one-on-one conversations between supporters across every [...]

Senator Joe Lieberman will not seek fifth term in 2012

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (I) will not seek a fifth term in 2012, according two Democratic sources familiar with the decision. Lieberman's office did not offer any comment on his plans, saying only that he would make an announcement tomorrow in Stamford, Connecticut. "The Senator's remarks tomorrow will stand on their own," said a Lieberman spokeswoman. Lieberman will be the second Democratic senator to make public his plans to leave the chamber in the past 24 hours. On Tuesday morning, North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad said he would not seek a a fifth term in 2012. On the Republican side, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison announced her retirement last week. Lieberman's long awaited decision means an end to a political career that took from the 2000 Democratic vice presidential [...]

Stupak: The Tea Party did not run me out

Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, targeted for defeat by Tea Party activists for his crucial role in securing House approval of the health care overhaul, said Friday he would retire from Congress this year. The nine-term congressman told The Associated Press he could have won re-election and insisted he wasn’t being chased from the race by the Tea Party Express, which is holding rallies this week in his northern Michigan district calling for his ouster. Instead, Stupak said he was tired after 18 years in office and wanted to spend more time with his family. “The Tea Party did not run me out,” he said in a telephone interview. “If you know me and my personality, I would welcome the challenge.” Stupak, 58, said he had considered retirement for years but was persuaded to [...]
