House and Senate negotiators have reached a deal on $39 billion in spending cuts to avert a government shutdown. “We fought to keep government spending down because it really will create a better environment for job creation,” said Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) at a press conference announcing the deal late Friday night. Boehner said a short-term spending bill will keep the government open until the final legislation is drafted next week. The short-term spending bill containing $2 billion in cuts would keep the government open through Friday, said a senior Senate Democratic aide. The deal on a longer term spending bill would cut $78 billion to $79 billion in spending, the aide said. In a joint statement, Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) said: “We have agreed [...]
A polling information center has concluded the surprise primary victory for Alvin Greene was not a GOP plot, but a completely random outcome based on an election in which both candidates were unknown. "I don't see any evidence of GOP chicanery," said Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling. Rep. Jim Clyburn has called for an investigation into Greene's win, saying he has seen evidence of tampering in a number of races across the state. Jensen disagrees. "Ultimately, what we're concluding is it was pretty much completely random who was going to win given that no voters had heard of either of the candidates," he said. The group had assumed Vic Rawl would win the primary, Jensen said, because he was expected to campaign much harder and he had the political bonus of [...]
Despite President Obama's claim that he sees no congressional appetite to address immigration reform this midterm election year, there's more convincing evidence this week that Americans want it. No White House administration wants to admit that it governs by polls. And this one hasn't. For more than a year now polls have shown the top concerns on American minds are.... ...jobs and the economy. As a result, this Obama White House and the whopping Democratic congressional majorities lead by Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi invested those many months in rancorous intra-party debate to obtain broad healthcare legislation. But pollsters keep asking the other questions: Out Wednesday is a new CNN/Public Opinion poll indicating that even more Americans want: -- The number of illegal [...]
By Albert N. Milliron, Editor, Politisite & Iron Mill News Service Many of us in the micro-blogging world have come to a standstill. I got my cup of coffee, lit up a cigarette, and went to my favorite rss feeds to see what the released political news of the day would be. Finding some excellent potential posts for my twitter account @politisite and @ironmillns, I fired up my Tweet Deck to begin my daily routine of posting. WHAT!!! twitter is down. How am I to communicate with the world at large? How can the politicos of the world live with out my posts? (I am a bit grandiose until the third cup of coffee.) So I checked around and I am not the only micro-blogger in turmoil. I thought of Obama for a moment that this is a crisis that could lead to catastrophe and what is [...]
