CNN Cancels March 1 Debate After Candidates Decline
What? No More Reality GOP TV? CNN canceled its March 1 Republican candidates' debate Thursday after three of four candidates declined to participate, citing busy campaign schedules leading to Super Tuesday. "Mitt Romney and Ron Paul told the Georgia Republican Party, Ohio Republican Party and CNN Thursday that they will not participate in the March 1 Republican presidential primary debate," CNN said in a statement. "Without full participation of all four candidates, CNN will not move forward with the Super Tuesday debate." Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum also said he would not participate, leaving only former House Speaker Newt Gingrich committed to attending. Still scheduled is a Feb. 22 debate sponsored by CNN and the Arizona Republican Party in Mesa, Ariz. It will be moderated [...]
CNN Sunshine State GOP Debate Tweet-By-Tweet
By: Edmund Jenks - West Coast Editor Holding a slim one point lead in the RealClearPolitics average of Florida polls, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will head into tonight’s crucial CNN debate against an opponent -- Newt Gingrich -- who has used these debate formats on multiple occasions to revive his campaign. Rick Santorum and Ron Paul will be there too, but the focus will be on the two undisputed front-runners in Florida, which holds its primary on Tuesday, Jan. 31. This is the last debate before then and may be the most important debate of this cycle (18th in the series) . (ht: Human Events) A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll of Florida Republicans shows Newt Gingrich 37%, Mitt Romney 28%, Rick Santorum 18% and Ron Paul 12%. This poll contradicts the other [...]
NBC ‘Rock Center’ GOP Debate From Tampa Bay Tweet-By-Tweet
By: Edmund Jenks - West Coast Editor With barely enough time to soak in the resounding and unexpected win in the South Carolina primary by former insider turned outsider, Newt Gingrich, NBC News Rock Center with Brian Williams is conducting the first of two televised GOP field debates before the Florida primary. The primary result in South Carolina (Newt - 40% vs Mitt - 28% ... a 12% spread) put egg on the faces of many recognizable Republican leadership faces, the most recognizable of which was the 2008 presidential election's Republican nominee, John McCain, New Jersey Governor Chris Cristie, and past Republican Political Party leader, Hailey Barbour. This potential Republican 'ruling class' drubbing may continue in Florida if the most recent polls from Rasmussen are to be [...]
Florida Republican debate: Where and What to Watch
Republicans gather for the 18th debate of the nominating battle tonight in Tampa, Florida. Below, three key questions about tonight's sure-to-be-nasty faceoff, which airs tonight from 9-11 p.m. Eastern Time ahead of the Sunshine State's January 31 primary: 1. Can Mitt Romney create a YouTube moment? Exit polls showed that Newt Gingrich's victory in the South Carolina primary was driven in large part by voters won over by his performance in two debates last week. Gingrich had two memorable moments in the debates - both involving sparring with the debate moderators - that went viral among conservatives and earned him standing ovations. Even when he was earning rave reviews in the early debates, Romney wasn't creating those kinds of moments - the ones that the voters who don't actually [...]
Let’s Try Four – CNN SCGOP Debate Tweet-By-Tweet
By: Edmund Jenks - West Coast Editor With three days to go until the first-in-the south primary, Mitt Romney remains in the lead in the Palmetto State, but according to a new poll, his advantage over Newt Gingrich is rapidly shrinking. A CNN/Time/ORC International poll indicates that 33% of likely South Carolina Republican primary voters say they are backing Romney, with 23% supporting Gingrich. The former Massachusetts governor's 10 point advantage over the former House speaker is down from a 19 point lead two weeks ago. According to the survey, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania is at 16%, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is at 13%, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry stands at 6%. Watch the CNN Southern Republican Presidential Debate – Charleston, South Carolina GOP Debate Coverage #CNNDebate
Watch the Debate Live stream here BLITZER’S BLOG: Why tonight’s debate is must-see TV Charleston, South Carolina (CNN) – Here are a few things I will be looking for in Thursday night’s CNN Southern Republican Presidential Debate: The four remaining candidates have been beating up on each other in recent days. Will they have the guts to blast their opponents when they are standing right next to them? Rick Santorum, whom I interviewed Thursday in Charleston, has had an ad running that says Mitt Romney is “just like Obama.” He refers to Romney’s support for health care mandates in Massachusetts. Will Santorum look Romney in the eyes and repeat that line Thursday night? Newt Gingrich told me in Iowa that he doesn’t think he could vote for Ron Paul if the Texas [...]
South Carolina Debate Touches on Race, Equity on MLK Day
Down one podium, the fantastic five took to South Carolina for yet one more GOP debate on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But different from previous debates, remarks on racial equality, unemployment and voting implications for minorities brought "color" to the race, so much so that even challenges on Romney’s Mexican roots were brought up. Was their acknowledgement simply a good gesture honoring the late Dr. King? Possibly, but the facts and demographics of the state certainly called for an increased sense of acknowledgement for an important voter base. According to the U.S. Census, one third of South Carolina is Black and Hispanic, 27.5% and 5.1% respectively. Also, South Carolina is one of the states showing 10-year triple digit population growth for Hispanics at a rate of 147.9%, [...]
And Then There Were Five – South Carolina GOP Debate Tweet-By-Tweet
By: Edmund Jenks - West Coast Editor That's right, and then there were five ... with Jon Huntsman "suspending his campaign" for president today and making a statement that he believes that Mitt Romney is the best candidate for the GOP to nominate. Huntsman believes he, Romney, could beat Barack Obama and has the resources to accomplish the task. Many believe that if Huntsman stayed in, he would have held between 7%-10% of the vote making it possible for someone to make a run at Romney's lead. Fact is, unless those groups that identify themselves as very conservative coalesce around one specific candidate, Mitt Romney will take all of the delegates and begin to establish the argument that there is no better alternative for the Republican run at the office of President! Question: [...]
