Chicago Prosecuted Fewest Federal Gun Crimes
The districts that contain Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City ranked last in terms of federal gun law enforcement in 2012, according to a new report from Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which tracks federal data. Federal gun crimes include illegal possession of a firearm in a school zone, illegal sale of a firearm to a juvenile, felon, or drug addict, and illegal transport of a firearm across state lines. We looked at the 200 largest metropolitan statistical areas and divisions in the U.S. to determine America’s Most Miserable Cities. The minimum population to be eligible was 259,000. We ranked each area on 9 factors, including average unemployment rate between 2010 and 2012; median commute times to work for 2011 based on U.S. Census data; violent crimes per capita from the FBI’s 2011 Uniform Crime Report. We included three housing metrics: the change in median home prices between 2009 and 2012; foreclosure rates in 2012, as compiled by RealtyTrac; and property tax rates based on median real estate taxes paid and median home values in 2011 per the U.S. Census. Jesse Jackson Jr. Charged with Spending $750K of Campaign Funds On Self
Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. was charged today with violating federal law by misusing campaign funds. Jackson, 47, a Democrat from Chicago, faces felony charges, including conspiracy, in a criminal information filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Typically, federal prosecutors use an information to charge defendants when a plea deal has been negotiated. His wife, Sandi Jackson, was charged in an information with one count of filing false tax returns. Jesse Jackson is accused of diverting $750,000 in campaign funds for personal use. Gun Control Failure of the Year – Chicago hits 500 Homicides for 2012
Here’s your gun control failure of the year. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Bradys were unavailable for comment: Chicago has hit a dismal milestone. A late night shooting has marked the city’s 500th homicide for the year. 40-year-old Nathaniel Jackson was shot on the city’s West Side around 9 p.m Thursday. He was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. The victim’s family has confirmed his identity. Chicago Police say Jackson was shot in the head while standing outside a convenience store at Augusta Boulevard and Lavergne Avenue in the Austin Neighborhood. …2008 was the last time Chicago reached 500 homicides. Court overturns Illinois Concealed Carry Gun ban
In a huge win for gun-rights groups, a divided federal appeals court in Chicago Tuesday tossed the state's ban on carrying concealed weapons and gave Illinois' Legislature 180 days to craft a law legalizing concealed carry. "The debate is over. We won. And there will be a statewide carry law in 2013," said Todd Vandermyde, a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association. Chicago, a city plagued by gangs, murder and a failing public education system, is the most American of cities, says Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Chicago is the most American of American cities," Emanuel said in talk last week to political science students at Northwestern University.
