White House Cancels Tours, Email: Make Sequester as Painful as possible
The White House announced Tuesday that it is canceling tours of the president’s home for the foreseeable future as the sequester spending cuts begin to bite and the administration makes good on its warnings of painful decisions. Announcement of the decision — made in an email from the White House Visitors Office — came hours after The Washington Times reported on another administration email that seemed to show at least one agency has been instructed to make sure the cuts are as painful as President Obama promised they would be. In the internal email, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service official Charles Brown said he asked if he could try to spread out the sequester cuts in his region to minimize the impact, and he said he was told not to do anything that would lessen [...]
CNN Cancels John King’s Political show, Blitzer expands
John King is an excellent political correspondent but his ratings on his own show were dismal. CNN will put him back on the campaign trail and expand Wolf Blitzer to three hours. The ailing cable news channel CNN on Wednesday abruptly ended “John King, USA,” its 6 p.m. political news program. The program will be replaced at the end of the month by “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” which will expand from two hours to three hours. Mr. Blitzer’s program currently precedes Mr. King’s, beginning at 4 p.m. Ken Jautz, the executive in charge of CNN, said in an internal memo that the schedule change was made to improve political coverage this year. Mr. King will be the network’s top campaign correspondent for the remainder of the presidential election cycle. He had a [...]
Jewish Temple cancels Debbie Wasserman Schultz speech
Miami's Temple Israel on Thursday canceled a program featuring Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz after a high-profile Republican donor quit the congregation to protest the top Democratic congresswoman's speech. Stanley Tate, a well-known philanthropist and prominent Republican who started Florida's prepaid college tuition program, resigned from the temple after he learned Wasserman Schultz would be talking about Israel after services on Friday night, and that he wouldn't get an opportunity for rebuttal. The temple's president, Ben Kuehne, a Miami attorney, said the event was canceled because of security concerns. He said they "certainly embrace the congresswoman's willingness to participate in one of our programs," but decided it was "unwise to proceed with the program [...]
CNN Cancels March 1 Debate After Candidates Decline
What? No More Reality GOP TV? CNN canceled its March 1 Republican candidates' debate Thursday after three of four candidates declined to participate, citing busy campaign schedules leading to Super Tuesday. "Mitt Romney and Ron Paul told the Georgia Republican Party, Ohio Republican Party and CNN Thursday that they will not participate in the March 1 Republican presidential primary debate," CNN said in a statement. "Without full participation of all four candidates, CNN will not move forward with the Super Tuesday debate." Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum also said he would not participate, leaving only former House Speaker Newt Gingrich committed to attending. Still scheduled is a Feb. 22 debate sponsored by CNN and the Arizona Republican Party in Mesa, Ariz. It will be moderated [...]

SEIU Drops Health Coverage for Workers’ Children
One of the largest union-administered health-insurance funds in New York is dropping coverage for the children of more than 30,000 low-wage home attendants, union officials said. The union blamed financial problems it said were caused by the state’s health department and new national health-insurance requirements. The fund is administered by 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union. Union officials said the state compelled the fund to start buying coverage from a third party, which increased premiums by 60%. State health officials denied forcing the union fund to make the switch, saying the fund had been struggling financially even before the switch to third-party coverage. The fund informed its members late last month that [...]
