The White House is touting over 6 million people have enrolled in Obamacare through the exchanges. Last night an Obama administration official said that even with a healthcare.gov glitch on the last of enrollment they were on track to meet the original 7 million goal.
But how many are really enrolled in Obamacare? A survey by McKinsey & Co. said that only 27 percent of the people who signed up through the Obamacare exchanges were previously uninsured. If we use the administrations number of 6 million, that would mean that only 2.2 million people have enrolled that didn’t not have health insurance.
The Los Angeles Times states that out of those who have “enrolled” approximately 80-90% have actually paid their first premium payment. That would bring the number of actual paid enrollments to 4.8 – 5.4 million overall and 1.8 – 2.0 million of those previously uninsured. That is a far cry from the reportedly 42 million people in the United States that don’t have health insurance.
The Times pointed out that 4.5 million people have enrolled in Medicaid programs and another 3 million young adults have been added to their parents health plans. Their final number comes to 9.5 million enrolled. That is where House minority leader Nancy Pelosi came up with her figure.
But what about all those people who lost their health insurance due to Obamacare mandates? Fox News and others report that that number is close to 4.2 million.
A twitter follower of mine, complained that we said actual figures of paid enrolled was not available. We were reporting a Jay Carney answer to, “how many of the 6 million that signed up for Obamacare have actually paid”. Jay Carney responded, “we don’t have those figures.”
Interesting, the Obama administration has the, ‘approaching 7 million Obamacare signups’ number but doesn’t have the number of actual paid participants? What that tells me is those numbers are poor and it would be bad political crisis management to report the actual figures.
So we must go with what he have. 1.8-2.0 million of actual paid enrolled who previously didn’t have health insurance. That means there is still 40 million uninsured in America. This gets to the GOP talking point, that after Obamacare is fully implemented there will still be 30 million uninsured.
