A devastating landslide Saturday killed three people, cut off a small town and a river and prompted an evacuation notice for fear of a potentially “catastrophic flood event,” authorities in Washington state said.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said, in addition to those dead, seven adults and a 6-month-old boy were rescued and sent to local hospitals.

One of those hospitals, Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, reported that five patients had been airlifted there and were in its care. Three of those — including the baby, a 58-year-old man and an 81-year-old man — were in critical condition Saturday night, according to spokeswoman Susan Gregg.

At least six houses were destroyed in the landslide, though the sheriff’s office noted they are still assessing exactly how many structures have been affected.

More than 100 rescuers searched inside the destroyed houses. One of the search teams had to be rescued after it got stuck in the mud.

Two hovercrafts were brought to the area for rescue efforts.

David Logan, 58, of Seattle, was among those waiting near the barricade on Highway 530. He said his brother lives in the slide area and he hadn’t heard from him.

“I know his house is destroyed,” Logan said.

Rochon said rescue operations and a broader search will need to be completed before heavier equipment can be brought in.

Paulo Falcao told KING 5 the slide came down right in front of him.

“I was coming down the hill and I just saw darkness, like somebody wants to grab you, and everything was gone,” he said.

More than 100 first responders converged on the scene, including those from Washington State Patrol, Department of Transportation, Department of Emergency Management, US Navy, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and most all of the fire department agencies in north Snohomish County.
