Dr Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani Doctor who helped US track Number 1 Enemy Osama Bin Laden, has had his sentence reduced by 10 years from 33 years to 23 years. Dr Afridi set up a fake immunization clinic that eventually lead to Osama Bin Laden being captured and killed by a daring US Navy Seals Team. With Afridi’s help, US was able to pin point exact location of the house and compound of world’s biggest Terrorist, Osama Bin Laden, which happened to be conveniently located in the heart of Pakistan’s military headquarters! This was a country that was getting millions of dollars to help the US in its war on terror!
In a daring raid, right under the nose of Pakistani Military, US SEAL Team 6, captured and killed Osama Bin Laden. Unfortunately, after the raid, Dr. Shakil Afridi was charged with conspiracy and treason against Pakistan! Pakistan angry and hurt by US action without its knowledge quickly threw Dr Afridi in jail on charges of “conspiring against the state” and imprisoned him for 33 years without bail. Even though that sentence was overturned by a tribal court last year, he was still being held and barred from visits from family and attorneys. Fox News reported that this was despite US Lawmakers attaching some strings to $33 million in aid to Pakistan, making the funds contingent on freeing the doctor who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden.
The GOP-controlled House Appropriations Committee had earlier inserted language that withheld foreign aid unless the State Department certifies Dr. Shakil Afridi was released from prison, where he’s serving 33 years sentence on dubious conspiracy convictions; the condition left Pakistani officials fuming. Nonetheless, Afridi’s lawyer, Qamar Nadeem Afridi, has been rightly concerned about the safety of his client in Peshawar Central Jail, where Afridi remains in solitary confinement. There have been reports of physical torture and further fears that Taliban fighters could break into the jail and exact revenge on Afridi for helping the U.S.
Pakistani jails are notorious for their cruelty and dangerous living conditions for all prisoners especially political ones. Says PRI that this is a Catch-22 situation: even if US officials wanted to do more, trying to force Pakistani government to release Afridi would only make him look more like a traitor in the eyes of many of his countrymen but at the same for the US to abandon a man who helped them capture their foremost enemy also hurt their ability to recruit foreign agents in future. Nonetheless, it is America’s duty to help free Dr Shakil Afridi because without his help, Osama Bin Laden would still be living freely in Pakistan under the tutelage of Pakistani Government! Afridi’s support helped the US to capture, kill and let Osama bin Laden drift away in the sea for ever and ever.
