The Republican Party took back San Diego’s mayoral seat Tuesday night, earning a rare victory for the GOP in California, which has been solidly blue in recent times.
The victory for Mr. Faulconer, 47, is an important win for California’s GOP, which controlled the Southern California city’s mayor’s office for two decades before the liberal Mr. Filner won in an upset in 2012. Democrats have a lock on all statewide executive offices and control both houses of the legislature. The victory makes San Diego, with a population of 1.3 million, the largest U.S. city with a Republican mayor.
