Miley Cyrus the twenty year old entertainer set the media ablaze, first by her raunchy performance at the MTV awards and then being utterly unaffected by the criticism. Cyrus’s performance sent shudders down mothers’ backs, their little girls wondering what was going on with Cyrus and why such a fuss over their idol. Parents are forgetting that morals and behavior may have changed since they were young. These are different times, where twenty year olds feel compelled to express their sexuality in the most tacky way. A big part of lowering of standards may have to do with the Internet which has left the field of morals and behavior utterly exposed.
Miley Cyrus’s risqué performance at the MTV VMAs drew complaints from a parenting pressure group – The Parents Television Council (PTC), which issued a complaint against the channel over the 20-year-old’s routine, which saw her dance suggestively in a nude bikini with singer Robin Thicke. It argued the show should not have been rated as suitable for 14 year olds adding: “Heads should roll at MTV.” Yeah right! Incidentally, Miley’s father Billy Ray Cyrus is among those on the PTC’s advisory board! Like any other twenty year old and especially one who is in the limelight, Cyrus appeared to be unaffected by the criticism, tweeting: “My VMA performance had 306,000 tweets per minute. That’s more than the blackout or Superbowl!”
This is just the kind of stuff, teenagers and twenty year olds like; the more notoriety the better. Miley Cyrus has done in a few minutes what the music industry would have had to do to publicize her coming album which is due for release in October. Not strangely enough, with the massive publicity from her performance, Cyrus’s album been climbing the digital charts based on pre-orders alone, while her single ‘We Can’t Stop’ is in the top five in both the UK and North America. Industry sources say the former Disney star can expect a sales boost of between 10 and 20% as a result.
The MTV VMAs has often been a source of controversy. In 2001, Britney Spears gave a raunchy rendition of her hit I’m A Slave 4 U, with a python draped over her shoulders. Two years later Madonna kissed Spears and Christina Aguilera on stage, and in 2009 Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for best female video, ranting that Beyonce should have won instead. This is MTV at its best. Controversy, provocation, publicity, shock and of course entertainment, are only some of the reasons MTV is so popular with the young crowd. Business is good with Smiley Miley on stage.
