The Senate defeated a bill sponsored by Missouri Senator Roy Blunt (R) 51-48. The bill would have effectively rolled back President Barak Obama’s contraception rule, which requires all employers, excluding churches, to insure their
iv> employees for no co-pay contraception.
Republicans have argued that the mandate to Catholic Hospitals and charities is a matter of interfering with the freedom of religion.
While Democrats have argued that the issue is a matter of women’s rights, the issue has been front and center on the GOP campaign trail. The issue has been taken up by Rick Santorum, who became very vocal on religious rights and moral issues. During the recent Michigan primaries, pundits have opined that this may have cost him the vote of independents, moderates and women.
