Lawyer in Cain Sexual Harassment Allegations Prepares to Go Public

Joel Bennett, the lawyer for one of the women who accused GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain of sexually inappropriate behavior while he headed the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, has given the association until Friday afternoon to respond to a proposed statement on the matter by his client.

“Our outside counsel was contacted by Mr. Bennett today and was asked to provide a response to a proposed statement by tomorrow afternoon. We are currently reviewing the document, and we plan to respond tomorrow,” said Sue Hensley, senior vice president for public affairs communications for the National Restaurant Association.

The group’s outside counsel, Paul Skelly, told Washington Wire, “we will certainly” respond by Mr. Bennett’s deadline. He said Mr. Bennett had shown him the statement the woman wishes to release, but he declined to characterize its contents in any way.

Whether that means Friday afternoon will bring the Cain matter to a head is not clear. Mr. Skelly said the restaurant association’s response to the statement might only send negotiations on to the next stage. But it does guarantee the matter will spin forward into the weekend, and possibly beyond.
