Rick Santorum to announce he’s running for President Monday near Shanksville, Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum returns to where he first struck political gold to officially announce what everyone has already known — he’s running for president.

Santorum will declare his candidacy on June 6 in western Pennsylvania. His grandfather worked in coal mines there after emigrating from fascist Italy. Santorum lives in northern Virginia but keeps a home in Allegheny County.

The kickoff will take place at Somerset County Courthouse, near where Santorum’s family got started in America and near where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001. The campaign said the setting was meant to evoke themes of hard work, selflessness and personal responsibility.

The former Pennsylvania senator has worked steadily to make political connections in the early primary states, visiting Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina more than a dozen times over the past months. He has barely registered on national polls of the Republican field, but some colorful remarks have garnered him widespread news coverage.
