John Edwards: “I’ve done wrong … I never ever thought I was breaking the law”

“There’s no question that I’ve done wrong … but I did not break the law, and I never ever thought I was breaking the law,”

John Edwards, a two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Senator, emerged from a Winston-Salem courthouse Friday afternoon with his eldest daughter by his side to proclaim that he “did not break the law.”

Edwards, 58, pleaded not guilty to federal charges of illegal campaign contributions, conspiracy and false statements after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts and a warrant was issued for his arrest Friday.

“There’s no question that I’ve done wrong … but I did not break the law, and I never ever thought I was breaking the law,” he told a crowd of reporters and photographers standing outside the courthouse.

His daughter, Cate Edwards, stood by his side.

If convicted on all counts, Edwards faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.
