The Herminator is officially running for the GOP presidential nomination! Although, as far as we can tell, there is no truth to the rumor that his official campaign slogan will be “Yes we Cain.”
He’s never won a political race. If he makes it to the Oval Office the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza would be the first president to have not held another elective office since Dwight D. Eisenhower. And unlike Ike, Cain didn’t win World War II.
Hotline On Call
“I’m running for president of the United States and I’m not running for second,” he told a crowd of supporters who chanted back: “Her-MAN, Her-MAN, Her-MAN.”
Wearing a dark suit and crisp white shirt, Cain introduced himself as “the won of a chauffeur and a domestic worker” who had achieved the American dream. Borrowing a phrase made famous by another Atlantan, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., he promised to set the nation “free at last” from President Obama’s leadership.
Cain has a long way to go to boost his name recognition now that he’s officially in the race. According to Gallup, only 29% of Republicans even know who he is. But as Cain spokeswoman Ellen Carmichael told TPM this week, the campaign is pleased with the amount of positive feedback they’ve received so far, and believes Cain’s stock will rise as more people get to know him.
“Let me tell you some of the reasons why I’m running for president of the United States. We have become a nation of crises,” he said, citing morals, the economy, entitlement spending, immigration and foreign affairs as among the crises facing the nation.
“And we’ve got a deficiency of leadership crisis in the White House,” he said to roaring cheers.

His speech tapped into the sentiment shared by many Americans right now that the nation is in decline, and that President Obama’s policies are making things far worse. Conservatives may find his blunt talk refreshing.
“One trillion dollars of spending to stimulate the economy,” Cain told the audience, “and it didn’t stimulate diddly.”
He vowed that as president he’d put the country back on track. “Number two is not in America’s DNA,” he said.
He ended his speech with a nod to the civil rights era as he imagined the day after the November 2012 election.
“When we wake up, and they declare the presidential results, and Herman Cain is in the White House, we’ll all be able to say: ‘Free at last! Free at last!,” a grinning Cain shouted at the audience, both hands raised like a preacher, “Thank God almighty this nation is free at last again!”
