Traficant out of Penn on Ohio Congressional Ballot

Former Ohio Rep. Jim Traficant will run for his old House seat this fall as an independent.

The Mahoning County Board of Elections, which met Monday evening to decide whether the former congressman had qualified for the 17th District ballot, determined that Traficant had secured 11 more petition signatures than he needed.

The announcement was reported by several local news outlets.

The decision caps a one-month battle Traficant’s supporters had waged to get his name on the ballot.

Traficant, known for his controversial style, is trying to wage a bid to challenge Democratic incumbent Tim Ryan, his former congressional aide, and Republican pharmacist Jim Graham for the seat he held for 17 years before his 2002 convictions on racketeering, bribery and tax evasion charges.
