Retaliation for critical tweets? PA Attorney General subpoenas Twitter accounts

A spokesman for Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett said he didn’t subpoena the identity of anonymous Twitter critics because of their criticism.

Corbett’s subpoena for the identities of the people behind two Twitter accounts spurred concern in tech and privacy circles this week.

“A lot of people on blogs and Twitter are critical of the Attorney General,” said spokesman Kevin Harley. “That is not the purpose of this investigation.”

Harley said he couldn’t discuss the details of an ongoing investigation or grand jury discussions.

The subpoenas came in the course of an investigation into “alleged criminal activity,” Harley said, though he said he couldn’t detail the alleged crime or confirm that it was something apart from the online speech itself.
