The U.N. is the Real Nut job: U.N. Elects Iran to Commission on Women's Rights

NEW YORK — Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged “immodest.”

Just days after Iran abandoned a high-profile bid for a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council, it began a covert campaign to claim a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women, which is “dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women,” according to its website.

Buried 2,000 words deep in a U.N. press release distributed Wednesday on the filling of “vacancies in subsidiary bodies,” was the stark announcement: Iran, along with representatives from 10 other nations, was “elected by acclamation,” meaning that no open vote was requested or required by any member states — including the United States.

The U.S. currently holds one of the 45 seats on the body, though the position is set to expire in 2012.

Iranian authorities have confirmed reports of their withdrawal from membership in United Nation’s Human Rights Council and announced their candidacy for the International Commission for Protection of Women’s Rights.

Ramin Mehmanparast, Spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry told IRNA today that following a decision by Asian countries, they have rescinded their candidacy for membership in the Human Rights Council.

Mehmanparast maintained: “According to an agreement amongst Asian countries, it has been decided that only one country from Asia would nominate itself for membership in the Human Rights Commission.”

Iran’s candidacy for membership in the Human Rights Council had drawn the criticism of numerous countries and human rights groups and activists. However, Mehmanparast played down the role of such opposition and emphasized that the Islamic Republic has cancelled its bid for the membership in coordination with Asian countries.

Hot Air- UN elects Iran to its commission on … women’s rights

This is the same group whose Human Rights Council includes luminaries like China and Saudi Arabia. See now why Ahmadinejad always includes a passage in his annual speech about expanding the number of permanent members in the Security Council or giving more power to the General Assembly? In the interest of “equality,” there’s no laugh test for exerting influence at the UN. The task for its more cretinous members is simply to extend that principle to the real levers of power. Because Iran’s all about equality, you see.
